TIPS FOR SOLO
1. GET OUT OF YOUR COMFORT ZONE
Whether that means eating at a restaurant alone, heading down to the bar solo for some (responsible) drinking and friend making, or literally jumping off the side of a cliff. Nothing is as hard as it seems, and you will most likely feel a great sense of accomplishment once you take that first step out of your comfort zone.
2. SURROUND YOURSELF WITH PEOPLE YOU TRUST
Obviously you can only get to know people so well but trust your gut. You don’t want to get stuck walking home alone at 4am in the dark (or running home if you’re as paranoid as me). And if you don’t trust the people around you, make sure that you can trust yourself (ie. have a phone/map, have money, don’t drink too much).
3. STOP CARING SO MUCH
People are way more preoccupied with themselves than with others so you might as well do you! We often have this distorted perception that everyone around is watching and judging our every move when chances are they could care less what you’re doing. You’re more likely to meet the type of people that you should be surrounding yourself with if you give off your genuine self.
4. SAY YES, BUT ALSO LEARN TO SAY NO
While it is great to see/do as much as possible while traveling, it is also okay to take some time for yourself. Traveling can be extremely tiring and sometimes you need to hit the pause button. Traveling alone is about doing exactly what you want when you want, so if you want to do nothing one day then it’s perfectly alright to do just that! It is also important that you use a solo trip as a way to learn more about yourself and what it is that you actually enjoy doing.
5. LIVE IN THE MOMENT
Don’t plan too far in advance! It is important to have a plan as it will help you to save time and money along the way, but make sure that you always leave some room for flexibility when possible. You never know when you’re going to find out about the perfect destination or meet the perfect travel companion, so planning out your trip too strictly can be quite a shame!
