After two incredible weeks exploring the beautiful island of Sicily from coast to coast, there is one town in particular that will always hold a special place in our hearts — Scopello.

I was a bit worried before visiting Scopello that it would be too small or too touristy. I don’t know if it was a perk of visiting in May before the busy season but Scopello was perfect. Yes, there are a lot of tourists and the restaurant prices are a bit higher, but this small seaside town is set at the foothills of beautiful rolling green hills, with sharp coves giving way to beautiful rocky beaches.

Where is Scopello?

Scopello is a small village in the northwestern part of Sicily, part of the Trapani province. It is located 1 hour from the city of Palermo, and just 45 minutes from the Palermo airport.

It is located close by to other popular tourist destinations including San Vito lo Capo, Trapani and Erice.

The town is also located just a short walk from the first nature reserve in Italy, a beautiful coastal path with spotted swimming coves.

Where to stay

Despite the small size of the village, there is still some great lodging options in and around the village of Scopello. We stayed at a small apartment just a short walk up the road from Scopello town called Casolare la Torre. The host was so so lovely and brought us the most rice balls and pastries from her bakery in town.

Things to do in Scopello

Hike to the beaches in Zingaro Nature Reserve

Zingaro Nature Reserve, located just a kilometer from the village of Scopello is actually the very first nature reserve in Sicily. Today you’ll find 70+ reserves across Sicily that have followed in its path. The reserve, which was founded in 1981, stretches 7km from Scopello to the tourist destination of San Vito lo Capo. The reserve was founded as the result of a petition signed by thousands of locals against the construction of a road connecting the two villages.

Take a walk to Cala Mosca beach

We made our way from the town of Scopello down a steep dirt path to the hidden beach of Cala Mosca. This is a small, quiet beach that is great for swimming and sunbathing. There are no facilities available to many sure to pack your own snacks and water.

Unlike many of the other beaches in Scopello, Cala Mosca is completely free to visit.

Visit the Tonnara di Scopello

By far the most famous thing to do in Scopello is visit the Tonnara di Scopello. The Tonnara di Scopello is a historic tuna factory in the heart of Scopello.

This beautiful spot has been featured in countless movies over the years.

You can book your visit as a day guest at their website. This gives you access to beach chairs, as well as a tour of the tonnara.

If you’re looking for a luxurious experience, you can actually book a stay at Tonnara di Scopello for 24/7 access to this beautiful spot.

Enjoy an aperitivo at Bar Pasticceria Scopello

An aperitif or in Italian, ‘aperitvo‘, is a drink that you have before a meal. Enjoying an aperitivo is extremely popular in Italy, and Bar Pasticceria Scopello is a great place to enjoy. If you visit in the evening you’ll recieve complimentary snacks like chips, and small slices of pizza with your trip. My aperitivo of choice is always a Campari soda, but Aperol Spitz are common as well.

This is also a great place to come in the morning for your ‘caffè‘ and a pastry.

Grab snacks from Scopello Pane Cunzatu

We had our first taste of the amazing pastries from Scopello Pane Cunzato at our lodging when we arrived, since the bakery is run by our apartment host. But we loved everything so much that we went back three more times.

Everything on the small menu is delicious so you truly can’t go wrong. Honestly, just go ahead and get one of everything. But whatever you do, make sure you try the ‘cassatelle’ for dessert.
